Ingredients

  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/4 cup onion
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup guava paste
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup or tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Preparation

  1. Finely chop garlic and dice the onion into small pieces. Heat oil in a skillet and add chopped garlic and onion and cook until translucent.
  2. Add guava paste and water and stir until smooth and the paste dissolves.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients and cook over low to medium heat until smooth, about 5 to 10 minutes. Be sure to not let the sauce boil.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and let cool.
  5. Store sauce in a jar or covered container until ready to use.

Helpful hints

Baste meat with sauce at the end of cooking.
Try Guava Barbecue Sauce on Puerto Rican Style Chicken Skewers or grilled beef or pork.
