Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sweet onion
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 small garlic clove
  • 2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco® hot pepper sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet® browning and seasoning sauce
  • 1-1/2 tablespoon butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparation

  1. Grate onion and mince garlic clove.
  2. Heat all ingredients over low heat until butter is melted and onion and garlic are soft cooked.
  3. Sauce is ready to use immediately, or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Helpful hints

  • For thicker sauce add 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour or 1 teaspoon rice flour during cooking.
  • Commercially prepared BBQ sauce averages 350 mg sodium for a 2 tablespoon serving. This recipe contains only 51 mg sodium including 1/4 teaspoon of salt. If you omit the salt sodium content is only 18 mg per serving.
